Know before you go

The schedule. Rock 'n' Horse runs a tightly programmed night: 7pm dinner service starts, 8pm line dancing lessons, 9pm bull riding opens, 10pm bull riding competitions, late-night DJ party with country-Top 40 crossover after. Most groups aim for the 9-10pm window for peak energy. Bachelor and bachelorette parties commonly book ahead.

Booking. Reservations recommended on Friday and Saturday, especially for groups. Walk-up works on Thursdays. Cover is $12 for men / free for women on Fridays. Saturdays $15-25 depending on event. Tickets sold via rocknhorsesaloon.com for fast-track entry on busy nights.

The bull. The mechanical bull is the venue's signature feature and most-photographed detail. Riders sign a waiver. The bull's difficulty is adjustable — beginners are common, and the staff scale it down accordingly. Argonauts players have publicly ridden it. Group photos at the bull are a near-universal trophy.

Our take on Rock 'n' Horse

Rock 'n' Horse is the only Toronto bar that has fully committed to a single concept and made it work. The country thing isn't a vibe — it's the whole identity. Mechanical bull, saddle bar stools, line dancing lessons, hickory-smoked brisket, Bulldog margaritas, DJ Country-to-Top-40 crossovers at midnight. Every detail is in the same key. That's the case for going: the night is built for you. You don't have to choose what kind of fun you're having. The bar makes the choice.

Where the venue earns its reputation is in the group dynamics. A Toronto bachelorette party or work group's birthday landing here is going to have a more memorable night than the same group at a generic King West cocktail bar. The line dancing lesson at 8pm pulls everyone onto the floor whether they planned to dance or not. The bull at 9pm creates a centrepiece for group photos. By 11pm the room is loud, packed, country-Top 40 hits hitting, and the floor is at capacity.

Best for: Bachelor and bachelorette parties — the entertainment is built in and the photos are guaranteed. Group birthdays where the host wants the night to "do something" rather than be polite drinks. Country fans (the genuine ones) — the DJ leans country deeper than any other Toronto room. Out-of-towners who want a Toronto night that isn't generic. Anyone who wants the bar to entertain them rather than the other way around.

Skip if: You want a quiet drink — the bull and the line dancing run loud all night. You want subtle or design-forward — the room commits to saloon kitsch on purpose. You want a date night — the energy is wrong for it. You want to wear an outfit that won't fit the saloon aesthetic — you'll feel out of place in a way the rest of King West won't make you feel.

About Rock 'n' Horse Saloon

Rock 'n' Horse opened in December 2013 at 250 Adelaide Street West, on the site of the previous London Tap House. Original owner Matthew Gibbons opened the venue with a deliberate niche bet — that Toronto didn't have a credible country bar despite a growing country music audience in the city. The opening got significant Toronto Life and blogTO coverage because two cowboy-themed bars opened the same week (Rock 'n' Horse on Adelaide, and Boots & Bourbon in Riverdale).

The space is divided across the second floor of the building, with The Porch rooftop patio directly above (different operating identity, same building, same group). The interior leans hard into the country saloon kit — wood-everywhere, saddle bar stools, Western posters, an authentic rope frame, the mechanical bull on a dedicated platform with a soft-fall pit around it, 21+ beers on draft, a dedicated margarita menu with customizable bases (Olmeca / Cazadores / premium tequila), and the signature Bulldog — a blended margarita with an inverted Corona stuck in the top.

Programming runs a country-to-Top-40 DJ format. Live country music nights happen on Thursdays. Friday and Saturday late-nights lean into the crossover — Big & Rich into Jackson 5 into modern Top 40 country. The venue is licensed by the MRG Group hospitality network. Won "Canada's Country Bar of the Year" at the 2019 Canadian Country Music Association Awards.

The food. Standard pub fare with a Southern twist. Hickory-smoked beef brisket, chicken-fried steak, bison burgers, chili dogs, Texas street corn. Wings come hot, honey-garlic, medium, or fresh-vegetable variants. The kitchen is solid but the venue isn't a restaurant first — the food is fuel for the entertainment, not the centerpiece.

The drinks. 21+ draught beers, bourbon-heavy spirits selection, a dedicated margarita menu (lime, mango, strawberry, raspberry; blended or on the rocks; three tequila tiers). The signature drink is The Bulldog — a giant blended margarita with an inverted Corona bottle stuck into the top. It's the venue's most-photographed item after the mechanical bull. Bucket cocktails are common and shareable, popular with groups.

Bottle service / table reservations. Available for groups, especially birthdays and bachelorette parties. Pricing scales with group size. Phone (437) 747-5916 or book via the venue website for group inquiries.

Rock 'n' Horse location & how to get there

Address. 250 Adelaide Street West, second floor. Entrance on Adelaide just east of Duncan Street. The Porch rooftop is directly above — same building, separate identity, often paired in a single night.

TTC. Closest subway is St Andrew (Line 1 University, ~6 minute walk south on University then west on Adelaide). 504 King streetcar at King & Duncan (~3 minute walk south). 510 Spadina streetcar at Spadina & Adelaide (~5 minute walk west).

Uber / Lyft. Drop-off zones around the building work well. Adelaide gets busy 11pm-2am with general Entertainment District traffic but isn't as congested as King West proper. Surge pricing common on Saturdays.

Parking. Surface lots and underground garages around Duncan, John, and Pearl Streets typically $15-$25 for the night. Drinking-and-driving is no smarter here than anywhere else — with the bourbon-heavy menu, plan accordingly.
