Legal & practical basics
What's the legal drinking age in Toronto?
19. Ontario's legal drinking age, set by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). Applies to all alcohol consumption and purchase at bars, nightclubs, restaurants, retail (LCBO, The Beer Store, Wine Rack), and as a guest on private property. Higher than several US states (21) and slightly higher than Quebec / Alberta (18).
What time do bars and clubs close?
Last call 2am citywide for standard licensed venues per AGCO. Venues stop serving alcohol at 2am and clear by 2:30am typically. Some venues hold festival permits or extended-hours permits allowing service until 4am (Lost & Found on certain nights, select event-format permits). Most restaurants close kitchens 10pm-12am.
What ID do I need?
Government-issued photo ID showing 19+. Accepted: Canadian driver's licence, Canadian passport, foreign passport, foreign driver's licence with photo, Ontario Photo Card, Indian Status Card, military ID, age-of-majority card. Photocopies and screenshots not accepted. Expired ID not accepted. Upscale supperclubs sometimes request two pieces. Visitors: bring passport plus home driver's licence as backup.
Are venues 19+ or can 18-year-olds get in?
Licensed venues = 19+. Restaurant-only venues can admit minors with parents/guardians but the 19+ requirement applies when alcohol service begins. Some 21+ clubs self-impose higher age (see Best 21+ Clubs). No major venues admit under-19s for nightlife programming. Fake ID = fines, possible criminal charges, ID confiscation.
Can I smoke or vape?
No indoor smoking or vaping anywhere — Ontario's Smoke-Free Ontario Act. Some venues have designated outdoor patios or smoking areas. Cabana Pool Bar and other outdoor venues have designated outdoor smoking zones. Marijuana similarly regulated — illegal indoors, generally not permitted on venue outdoor areas. Edibles from licensed Ontario retailers can be consumed before going out per personal discretion.
What about COVID requirements?
No current COVID restrictions on Toronto nightlife as of 2026. Provincial vaccination passport requirements lifted 2022. Most venues don't require masks, vaccination proof, or testing. Individual events may run policies; check programming. Toronto operates fully normalized nightlife comparable to pre-2020 baseline.
