Bar Maaya took over the Adelaide Street space that used to be Bar 244 and rebuilt it around a single idea: Eastern flavours, Western technique, maximum theatre. The name plays on the Sanskrit word for illusion, and the room commits — dark tones cut with vivid colour, moody lighting, and a drinks list split three ways between tweaked classics, a full absinthe service, and bar manager Priyanshu Choudhary's South Asian–inflected signatures. The famous one is the Saffron Spice: saffron-infused vodka, ginger liqueur, mango and egg white, wrapped in burning steel wool so it arrives glowing.
It's a bigger operation than the Instagram clips suggest — around 180 seats split between the lively front bar and a calmer back dining room, with a shareable tapas menu carrying the food side. The live programming is the differentiator: flamenco on Fridays from 8 to 11pm, violin and saxophone on Saturdays, jazz appearances besides. Happy hour (Tuesday to Sunday, 4–6pm) drops select cocktails to $8, which for this postal code is nearly charity.
The catches: tables run on a 90-minute limit, so this is a first-act venue rather than an all-nighter, and when the room is full the bar area gets loud enough that the back room is the better date seat. Late on weekends, the energy migrates downstairs to Mia, the sister club in the basement that runs house music into the small hours — a separate room with its own door culture.
