Boxcar Social solved a problem in 2014 that most bars still haven't noticed: the gap between the last flat white and the first glass of wine. The original Summerhill room ran both programs under one Victorian roof — serious multi-roaster coffee, serious bottle list — and the idea earned a small following, then a small chain: Harbourfront, a Financial District laneway, and now this room at Waterworks on Richmond West.
The Waterworks location is the one that matters for a night out, purely on geography. It sits inside the restored 1930s Waterworks building — the art-deco former city works depot that reopened as a food hall in 2024 — with its own entrance beside St. Andrew's Playground park, one block north of the King West strip. The coffee program is legitimate (Subtext Coffee Roasters on the multi-roaster bar, single-origin only, tea from Spirit Tea), and as the afternoon turns over, the room does too: craft beer, wines with a natural and biodynamic lean, and the whisky the group built its reputation on — the Toronto Life headline once called Boxcar “a shrine to scotch whisky,” and it wasn't exaggerating much.
The honest caveat is the clock. This is a daytime-into-evening room, not a night one — public listings show doors at 8am weekdays and 9am weekends, with the official site listing service to about 8pm. Treat it as the first chapter of a King West night: a proper drink in a calm room, then a three-minute walk south to whatever the rest of the evening looks like.
Bottom line: the smartest first stop on the north edge of King West. Come at 6pm, drink one good glass of something you can't get at the club, and leave before you're tempted to order a third. If you want the night to start loud instead, skip straight to the strip.
