DROM Taberna opened in 2018 at 458 Queen West and has spent the years since becoming exactly what its name promises — "drom" is the Romani word for road, and the room plays like a crossroads. On any given week the calendar runs Balkan brass, vocal jazz, blues, funk jams, Latin and Afrobeat sets, folk from a half-dozen traditions. Live music every night it's open, often more than one act, on a stage close enough that the trombone player will make eye contact.
The economics are the charming part. Most nights there's no cover: sets are pay-what-you-can, and after each one co-owner Misha Artebyakin — or whoever's holding the room that night — delivers the hat speech and passes it around for the band. It's a genuinely different social contract than anywhere else on this site: you're not paying a door, you're paying musicians, and the crowd behaves accordingly. People listen. Then, when the brass kicks in late, people dance wherever they're standing.
The kitchen backs it up with Eastern European comfort — the ćevapi (Bosnian beef, veal and lamb kebabs with kajmak, ajvar and lepinja) is the signature order — and the bar leans into the theme. The trade-offs are physical: it's a small taverna, tables go fast on weekends, and if you arrive at 11pm on a Saturday you'll likely be standing shoulder-to-shoulder. That's also sort of the point.
Bottom line: the anti-club that out-parties most clubs. Book a table for the early set, eat well, stay until the hat comes around a third time. If your night needs sparklers and a sound system, go east on King — if it needs a brass band at 1am, there's nowhere better in the city.
