Waterworks opened in summer 2024 inside one of the best rooms in the city — a 55,000-square-foot, 1932 Art Deco public-works building on Brant Street that sat mostly dormant for a decade before Woodcliffe and MOD Developments restored it. The 44-foot ceilings, original steel beams and heritage brick do a lot of work: this is the rare food hall that feels like an event space even on a Tuesday. More than 20 vendors run the food side, from Aburi's flame-seared hand-roll sushi to ramen, tacos, deli and burgers, and the quality baseline is well above mall-food-court territory.
What earns it a place on a nightlife site is the drinking infrastructure. Three real bars operate inside: Waterworks Bar anchoring the hall, Grape Witches pouring natural wine, and Civil Works — a legitimate cocktail bar that stays open until 2am Thursday through Saturday, hours after the food hall itself winds down. Stack the happy hours (3–6pm daily and again 9pm–close at Waterworks Bar) and you can run a full evening here for less than a round of cocktails costs at the bottle-service rooms five minutes south.
The honest limits: this is not a party venue. Music stays ambient outside of programmed events, most of the room is families and after-work groups until 8pm, and Sunday-to-Wednesday closing is 10pm. Weekends bring DJs and one-off events on the programming calendar, but if you show up expecting King West club energy you'll be confused. Show up expecting the city's best-looking pre-game and you'll be back weekly.
Bottom line: the smartest first act in King West. Meet at 7, eat well across three vendors, ride the 9pm happy hour, then walk to the clubs — or just settle into Civil Works until 2am. If the group wants one venue that does everything all night, book a supper club instead. For everything before midnight, this is the move.
