Bar 404 hides on John Street behind a storefront dressed as a candle shop — the name and logo riff on the “404 not found” error, the idea being that you disappear for the night. Once inside, it's bigger than the speakeasy label suggests: a raised golden circular bar, low leather chairs instead of stools, warm spa-like lighting, and three large semi-closed booths along the wall. There's one way in and a separate hidden exit, a design choice that tells you exactly how they want the night to go: slowly.
The bar program is the point. Signature cocktails — Got Lychee, 1 Per Day, Daydreaming, Peanut Booze and Jelly, Sip in Theatre — run roughly $19 to $25 with genuine presentation flourishes, and the whisky shelf is a flex: the venue claims the largest Macallan collection in North America. Chef Shiv Patel's tapas menu travels widely — blistered shishitos, tiradito, tandoori shrimp, burrata, and a truffle flatbread that's become the room's signature order.
What it isn't: loud, late-late, or a place to dance. Energy peaks as a full, humming lounge on Friday and Saturday nights, with a soundtrack that stays under the conversation. The trade-offs are the usual speakeasy ones — premium pricing, a room that rewards booking ahead, and a format that suits couples and foursomes better than big crews.
Bottom line: the Entertainment District's most polished hidden room. Book a booth, order the flatbread, let the bar team show off. If you need a DJ and a dance floor after, the district has plenty within a five-minute walk — that's what makes this the perfect first stop.
